Today is the day when we all crack out the tinsel and go hunting for that perfect fir tree.

But maybe this year before getting caught up in the festivities we could all think a bit about our traditions and their impact on the environment.

That gorgeous fresh fir tree you have to have or that gaudy shiny cheap wrapping paper that is a staple for your present wrapping.

Here are some ways to navigate the festive seasons in an eco-friendly way.

Forget the Fir

Also a freshly smelling fir straight out the ground seems too hard to miss, these trees usually come from plantations that are in so many ways horrible for the environment.

When making your selection, be on the lookout for organic/seasonal tree farms or “live trees,” which still have the roots attached and can be planted after the season is over. A live native tree in its pot is a far more trendy addition to the Christmas decoration extravaganza especially when covered with all the baubles and tinsel you can reuse from last year.

Reusable Wrapping

Unless its paper wrapping it is generally not recyclable. So instead of spending all the time wrapping gifts, pop them in a reusable box or bag.

Recycle

Having a large party for Christmas? Why not buy some extra bins with easy to read labels (GLASS, PAPER etc) so your guest know exactly where to place items that can be recycled!
