Native trees and native birds, of course, go hand in hand. So an easy rule when attracting birds to your garden is go native. Native plants will be more successful as they are adapted to similar conditions, and they are especially important if your garden forms part of a wildlife corridor to local bushland, as you don’t want to introduce harmful weeds.
Also keep in mind though what plants are right for your garden. There is no use in planting high maintenance shrubs that you can’t deal with.
Also, remember that not all birds eat the same things! Do you have plants that provide nectar, fruit or seeds, as well as those important ones that bring insects in?
It makes the choice easier when you ask yourself what each plant might provide for birds ie food, shelter, nesting material or a nesting site?
Plants that are good for nectar, insects & shelter: mucronulata, G. shiressii, G. arenaria, G. rosmariniflora
Plants that are great for seeds, insects & shelter: Acacia myrtifolia, Acacia linifolia
Plants that are great for nesting material: Callistemon citrinus, Tussock Grass, Poa labillardieri, Kangaroo Grass, Themeda australis, Tall Spear Grass, Stipa pubescens.
Happy Planting!
